Life

He was born in Samalut, Minya, Egypt[2]. Masr360 reports that he studied theology in Athens, was sent abroad by the Patristic Studies Center founded by Dr. Nasry Abdel Shaheed, was tasked with founding an Egyptian church in Greece, and served in two churches, the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Greek Orthodox Church[3].

Sources disagree about his doctorate (see disagreements): Islamist-Movements Portal says a PhD from the University of Limoges on the influence of Hellenic culture on the Egyptian personality[2]; Masr360 says Limoges in 2010 on Egyptian monasticism and Coptic identity[3]; in an interview he himself spoke of the Sorbonne and Coptic theology[4]. A November 2015 interview (10 November) describes him as adviser to Metropolitan Seraphim of Athens for Greek Orthodox Arab affairs[2].

Al-Dustour (2018) and Al-Youm Al-Sabea (2019) report that the Coptic Church removed him from the priesthood under Pope Shenouda III and that he later served in the Greek Orthodox Church, ordained through the Metropolis of Veria according to Al-Dustour[1][4]. He attributes the removal to non-doctrinal circumstances; this is his account alone[4]. Masr360 published a notice of his death on 19 July 2022[3].

Where the sources disagree

(1) Identity: the article «شركاء الطبيعة الإلهية» by him was NOT located, so the quotation is unverified; the form 'Athanasius Ishaq Hanin' appears in search-result titles of an Arabic apologetics site (not fetched). (2) Church: he is not a priest of the Patriarchate of Alexandria; sources describe a former Coptic priest who joined the Greek Orthodox Church in Greece. (3) Doctorate: Limoges (Islamist Movements Portal; Masr360, 2010) vs. Sorbonne (his own 2019 interview). (4) The reason for his removal from the Coptic priesthood is disputed: Al-Dustour speaks of accusations of doctrinal deviation; he attributes it to other causes. The Al-Dustour piece is polemical, so only its basic facts are used. No date of birth or exact date of death was found.
