### Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos says in the book Life After Death

The purpose of Christ’s Incarnation was to destroy death and sin, and to defeat the devil. In truth, Christ took a mortal and weak body in order to defeat death. He overcame death through His crucifixion and resurrection, and He gave man the ability to overcome it himself in his personal life after he is united with Him. This purpose is achieved through the Mysteries of the Church, which do not free man from what is called the psychological feeling of guilt, nor do they appease God for Adam’s sin, but rather they defeat death. Through baptism we become members of the risen Body of Christ, and through Holy Communion from the Body and Blood of Christ we receive the medicine of immortality. It is not only the soul that is united with God, but the body also receives a sense of this inner change and of the transformation of the soul. This is seen clearly in the relics of the saints of the Church.
